PITTSBURGH DANCE COUNCIL
Executive Director
Paul Organisak
Mission Statement
"Incorporating diversity, balance and a high level of quality in all presentations and related activities, the Pittsburgh Dance Council is committed to expanding the visibility, appreciation and presentation of dance as an art form in the Greater Pittsburgh area and nurturing the field of dance on local, national and international levels."
About the Organization
The Pittsburgh Dance Council has presented dance in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area for 30 years. In that time, the Dance Council has established contemporary dance as a primary art form in Pittsburgh, demonstrated by its leadership role in the downtown Cultural District. As a resident company of the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts and a major tenant of the Byham Theatre, the Dance Council has a strong and important voice in the local community. Much of the work presented, especially the international artists and emerging artists, would not be seen in Pittsburgh without the commitment of the Dance Council. By committing 40% of its programming to artists of color, focused primarily on African-American, Asian, and Latino/Hispanic artists, the Dance Council subscribes to the belief that art can be a catalyst for positive social change by exploring community issues through the artist's creative process.

The Dance Council is a primary partner of the National Performance Network, a hub site of the National Dance Project, and holds membership in the Association of Performing Arts Presenters,
Pennsylvania Arts Alliance, the Greater Pittsburgh ARts Alliance, and PA Presenters.

In addition to its nationally-recognized presenting series, the Dance Council regularily commissions new work and has commissioned 25+ works from arists (choreographers and composers). Programatically, it also operates:

  • The Bayer Ticket Fund, a subsidized ticket distribution program to aid student, seniors, and physically challenged patrons;
  • The Choreographers Continuum, a regranting/commissioning program for Pittsburgh-based choreographers;
  • Global Motion, an in-school program of world dance;
  • Building Bridges, a series of culturally focused programs that deepen and enhance its partnerships in the African-American, Hispanic/Latino and Asian communities.
